IGP, KYARI AND THE LAW

DCP ABBA KYARI

By Yakubu Ahmed-BK

You can't love DCP Abba Kyari more than the Inspector General of Police Baba Alkali Usman.

Apart from being his fellow Kanuri, they are from the same state of Borno. Some say the IGP is from Yobe. Even if he is, I don't see any point of departure between the two.

The case involving Abba Kyari and Hushpupy is a straight forward matter in which the IGP dare not allow sentiments overide his sense of duty and the oath of office he took. It is clear that although Abba Kyari has endeared himself into our hearts and has become a hero of some sort, we tend to be a bit sentimental in the way we judge the severity of the case.

For me, the IGP has, by the action he took of asking the PSC to suspend the DCP pending the outcome of investigation, demonstrated his commitment to bequeathing a Police Force worth its name. It sends a clear message that nobody is above the law and that Nigeria is serious about cleansing itself of all vintages of underhand and sharp practices in the way  it prosecutes criminals and other offenders.

The IGP, has made it clear, that the investigation will be thorough and devoid of any other motive other than to unravel the truth. If, at the end of the investigation, Abba Kyari is found to be clean, he automatically returns to his beat. If he is culpable, then I want to believe that it will only be fair and just if he carries his cross.

That Abba Kyari  has been gallant and very productive in the fight against violent crimes will be immaterial here, as far as the law is concerned. Guilty or not guilty, Kyari has paid his dues and no one can take away his place in history as one hell of a super cop who was doing so well and was headed for the top when one wrong step, as we mortals are tempted to, spoilt the dream.

He remains a hero to many people and my hope personally is for him to clear his name, and resume his work of dealing with bad boys.
